Keep Rocking Against Racism

First launched in winter 1976 as an one-off response to the rise of racism in Britain, Rock Against Racism is back this year and promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Staged in Victoria Park – the historical root of the first gig against racism – this year’s Love Music Hate Racism (LMHR) carnival will see live music performance from big bands on three stages, DJ sessions and carnival-style march.

Some of the most talked-about performers of hip hop, indie, grime, rock, R&B, funky house and jungle music are to be expected at the event.

Big contemporary bands like Babyshambles and Fionn Regan will be among the ones trying to encourage Londoners to vote against racism in the upcoming Greater London Assembly and local council elections due on May 1.

The elections

Among the potentially controversial candidates, Richard Barnbrook – British National Party’s councilor and candidate for London Mayoral Election 2008, vows to “Remove the one million or so illegal immigrants living here and making London a better place for us all to live."

Gerard Batten of UK Independence Party was quoted as saying: “As far as I am concerned there are only Londoners and British citizens. As Mayor I will only spend money where that is in the interests of London and Londoners as a whole.”

Love Music Hate Racism

There will be talks and debates about racism, as well as information on tackling racism in different areas of life.

The 2008 Carnival will have three stages - two outdoor live music stages and a large DJ marquee.

Prior to the main event in the park there also will be a march opposing racism and fascism.

According to LMHR website, stars of the ‘78 event and the RAR already confirmed to appear include Tom Robinson, The Specials’ Jerry Dammers, and ace filmmaker and Clash collaborator Don Letts.
