The words of a woman

Female writers Sunny Singh, Sarah Law and Briar Wood shared their work with whoever was willing to listen in a free literary evening organised by the Women´s Library on Thursday March 13.

The three authors talked about medieval saints, mystics and madwomen from 6.30 pm in an event full of poetry and fiction that has been labeled “Everything is permitted: Metropolitan Women Writers”.

They also “unraveled the historical connections between women´s lives past, present and future”, according to sources from the library.

Sharing expertise

The evening was a chance for Singh, Law and Wood to showcase their literary productions, but also to share their expertise in the field of creative writing with a wide audience.

The talk took them beyond the confines of the university, where they are senior lecturers or have taught at some point.

Sunny Singh is the course leader of London Met creative writing course. Born in India, she has worked as a journalist and teacher.

She has also been a management executive for multinationals in Mexico, Chile and South Africa, and is now enrolled in a PhD program at the Universitat de Barcelona (Spain).

On her part, Sarah Law taught creative writing in the University of East Anglia (Norfolk) in 2005. Her poetry has been published in three different collections: “Bliss Tangle”, “The Lady Chapel” and “Perihelion”.

Briar Wood, also a poet, has moved between Britain and New Zealand and is now a senior lecturer in creative writing in London Met specialized in postcolonial theory, feminism and psychoanalysis.

A busy season in the Women’s Library

Also on March 13, the library offered a free guided tour of the exhibition “Sinners, scroungers, saints: lone mothers, past and present”.

From 6.30 pm, the visitors got to know the experiences of lone mothers from the late eighteenth century to our days. The tour will take place again on March 29.

The library tours scheme includes yet another exhibition, this time focused on women´s desires in spheres like politics, work, leisure, beauty and home life.

The exhibition labeled as “What women want: stories from the Women´s Library” opens on May 1st, but the first free guided tour will take place on Saturday April 26 from 12 pm.
